Poynter Institute Leader Returns to DU to Address Graduates

    Aug. 2, 2012

Jill Geisler, head of the Poynter Institute’s leadership and management programs, will address Work Happy: Motivation that Really Matters, Boss to nearly 100 graduates as the commencement speaker for Duquesne University’s School of Leadership and Professional Advancement (SLPA) on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 1:30 p.m. in the A.J. Palumbo Center. The ceremony, which will be webcast live, will feature a graduating class, over one-third of whom are on active duty or are veteran military, from 16 states.

Geisler, who earned her master’s degree online from SLPA in 2004, is the host of the Poynter Institute’s popular podcasts on iTunesU that focus on leadership studies. A nonprofit that is well-respected for its training of journalists, the institute promotes excellence and integrity through programs featuring faculty that includes distinguished professionals and scholars.

Starting as a reporter, photographer, producer and anchor, Geisler became the news director of a major market network TV affiliate in 1978 at the age of 27, and was among the first women in the country in this role. She built an award-winning newsroom culture at WITI-TV in Milwaukee, where coaching and collaboration, ethics and enterprise, fun and family were all important.

In 1998, she was recruited to the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla. Although journalism is Geisler’s first career, her management expertise has been tapped by leaders in a variety of workplaces. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin.

Recognized with the Distinguished Service to Journalism award by the University of Wisconsin and voted into the Hall of Fame by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association, Geisler has been inducted into the Silver Circle of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
