Education Work with Urban, Minority Communities Earns Award for Duquesne Professor

    Jun. 13, 2012

Dr. Launcelot Brown, associate professor and chair of the educational foundations and leadership department in Duquesne University’s School of Education, received the Sizemore Spirit Award at the school’s third annual Barbara A. Sizemore Summer Conference on June 1.

The award is presented to a faculty member whose extraordinary research and/or teaching efforts have advanced the School of Education’s focus on urban education.

Brown was selected for his ongoing support of the Sizemore Pipeline Initiative, which works with Pittsburgh Public Schools to facilitate high academic achievement and prepare students for future careers as teachers. Last year, Brown spoke with students about assessments and test anxiety at Langley High School’s Leading Teacher Academy.

In addition, Brown serves as a research mentor for The Heinz Fellows. Nine African-American men from across the country, selected by The Heinz Endowments, are pursuing master’s degrees in secondary education at Duquesne.  These scholars presented at the Sizemore Conference, discussing the details of their Participatory Action Research projects as a transformative teaching tool and their efforts to mentor African-American males in a local public high school. Brown, as one of six faculty research mentors, provided guidance on the fellows’ research design and implementation.

Before joining Duquesne, Brown worked in Trinidad, serving as principal at the Cascade School for the Deaf and as acting principal at Wharton-Patrick School for students with emotional and behavioral disorders and learning problems.
