‘Washington Monthly’ Ranks DU 11th Nationwide for Social Mobility

    Aug. 30, 2011

Duquesne University has been ranked as No. 11 nationwide by Washington Monthly magazine in providing social mobility to low-income students and among the top 100 universities overall. The social mobility category considers schools’ recruiting and graduating low-income students.

Overall, Duquesne is listed as No. 84 among 258 schools in Washington Monthly’s 2011 National Universities rankings. Different from other magazine rankings, Washington Monthly rates schools based on their contributions to the public good in the categories of social mobility, research and service.

In the service category, Duquesne University is ranked 16th for community service participation and hours served, and placed 75th overall for its service, staff, courses and financial aid support.

“Calling attention to these service-oriented schools is one of the reasons this magazine got into the college-ranking business in the first place,” explains Washington Monthly on its website. “…So we devised a way to measure and quantify how well individual colleges and universities were meeting their public obligations in the areas of research, service and social mobility, and we ranked schools based on the results.”

Regarding its methodology, Washington Monthly considers each of its three categories equally, and the final rankings are designed to reflect excellence across the full breadth of their measures rather than on just one category.
