    Harrison City Resident Wins Beard Student Award at Duquesne University

    The Duquesne University 2011 Eugene P. Beard Award for Leadership in Ethics student winner is Brian Read, a senior accounting major from Harrison City.

    This student award is given each year to an outstanding undergraduate senior who is evaluated on his dedication to the University mission statement, service to others, academic achievements, as well as his leadership roles and overall presence on campus.

    Since 1997, this award has been presented each year to a graduating student who best exemplifies the University’s commitment to moral and spiritual values.

    Read received the Beard award because he practices ethical leadership, shows profound concern for moral and spiritual values, and makes an impact at the University and in the local community.

    A member of Best Buddies, a program that partners volunteers with a disabled high school or college youths, Read works directly with an autistic young man at Duquesne, accompanying him to game nights, basketball games and other events.

    He has participated in various activities on behalf of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital through his fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon, including an annual letter-writing campaign that solicits donations for the hospital. He also works in support of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Zoo Walk for Alzheimer’s.

    Additionally, Read has served as a speaker for the Palumbo Donahue School of Business Open House for the past two years.

    The Beard Award for students has been presented annually since 1997.
