Duquesne University Surpasses Fundraising Goal Early

Duquesne University has exceeded the largest capital campaign goal in the school’s history a year ahead of schedule, President Charles J. Dougherty announced today at an employee Christmas luncheon. The Advancing Our Legacy fundraising effort, which is slated to end in December 2012, has reached $151.3 million, $1.3 million over the goal announced in 2008.

But to doctors and nurses working in rural clinics in sub-Saharan Africa, the older model beds and tables, long since replaced by electric versions in the U.S., are a God-send—a way to get sick patients up off crowded floors and a sanitary place to perform life-saving surgeries in areas where electrical power is scarce or non-existent.

Free Conference Helps Preschool/Early Childhood Educators Incorporate Music Into the Classroom

The Mary Pappert School of Music will host area preschool teachers and early childhood educators at a free, two-day Early Childhood Music Initiative (ECMI) Professional Development Conference on campus Friday, June 10, and Saturday, June 11. Approximately 125 teachers will participate in various workshops and activities presented by early childhood music experts who will teach them how to incorporate music into their classrooms.

The School of Law will be the recipient of a newly established $1.2 million endowment fund, thanks to Chancellor and Professor of Law John E. Murray Jr. Murray designated the funding, which originated from a grant the Richard King Mellon Foundation made in 2001 in honor of his service to the university and community, to leave an important legacy during the School’s centennial year. The Dr. John and Liz Murray Endowed Fund for Scholarly Development will enhance the scholarly environment and culture in Duquesne’s School of Law.

Forensic Fridays: Problems and Advances in Eyewitness Identification
Flawed eyewitness identification is emerging as one of the primary causes of wrongfully convicted felons. Featured speakers at this seminar include Dr. Susan Goldberg, assistant professor of psychology at Duquesne; John Rago, professor of law and Pennsylvania Innocence Commission Chair; and Dr. Sheila Seelau, associate professor of forensics and psychology and coordinator of Chatham University’s forensics program. These and other experts will address the historic problems and the latest research advances in the field of eyewitness identification. Authorization of Familial DNA Search is Currently in Pennsylvania Legislature
While the use of familial DNA has been authorized in California, Colorado and, most recently, Virginia, it has not yet been given the green light here. Introduced to the Pennsylvania Legislature in March as part of Senate Bill 775, the use of familial DNA is increasingly occurring in cold cases and others where suspect DNA cannot be found at the crime scene. In such searches, investigators look for close but not exact matches between DNA evidence and databanks of DNA collected from convicted felons, casting a wider net than previously considered permissible.
