    Duquesne Graduate Students Place in Government Case Competition

    Three graduate students from Duquesne University contributed to teams that were finalists in a recent local government case competition.

    Russell Brown of McKeesport, a student in Duquesne’s Graduate Center for Social and Public Policy, and Mary Stotler of Squirrel Hill, an MBA student at Duquesne, contributed to the first-place team.

    Lauren Sukal of Mount Lebanon, also of the DU Graduate Center for Social and Public Policy, served on the team that placed third.

    In the Government Case Competition sponsored by the Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS), graduate students from different schools were challenged to solve a public policy issue over the course of 48 hours .This year’s challenge was:  Your team was hired in 2010 to devise and implement a plan to narrow the academic achievement gap for students receiving DHS services and raise the bar for all students enrolled in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Ten years later, what accomplishments could you present to community leaders from your decade of work?

    The competition brought together 55 graduate students who were nominated by faculty at the region’s top public policy, social work, business and law programs forming 16 teams. The presentations are judged by local business and community leaders, college faculty members, foundation representatives, DHS staff and previous winners.
