Duquesne University Opera Workshop: Scenes Night Offers Introduction to Opera

    Nov. 24, 2009

Are you curious about opera but don’t want to invest a night and full ticket price to find out if you enjoy it?

The Duquesne University Opera Workshop provides an introduction to opera, with a series of scenes that provide a taste of a full production.

Internationally known performer Guenko Guechev, chairman of voice department at Duquesne, will direct the scenes, which encompass different historical music eras as well as different languages.

The Opera Workshop is also unique providing a different way to look at an ensemble and how both music and theater are created on the stage by young performers.

Opera scenes from Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern musical eras will be sung in English, Italian and German. Those attending will be able to hear Monteverdi, Verdi and Corigliano performed on the same evening’s program.

Additionally, the program offers a rare glimpse into the training of operatic singers. The pieces are learned, memorized and staged within two months of preparation. Aspiring high school students can see singers close to their own ages and gain a sense of how their voices develop.

    When: Friday, Dec. 4, at 8 p.m.

Where: PNC Recital Hall, Pappert School of Music, Duquesne University, 600 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh.

    Cost: Suggested donation, $10.
