    PCHE Statement Regarding the Mayor’s Decision to not Pursue the Tuition Tax

    The Pittsburgh Council on Higher Education (PCHE) welcomes today’s announcement by Mayor Ravenstahl that a tuition tax on students will no longer be pursued by the City as a revenue solution for the legacy challenges presented by its historically underfunded pension plans.  PCHE has long acknowledged the seriousness of those challenges for the City and for City taxpayers, including many of our own students and employees. PCHE has recommended a broad-based coalition that will secure a long-term structural solution to these challenges. Based on today’s announcement, PCHE welcomes the opportunity to partner with the City and others in such a collaborative endeavor. Read more »

    Department of Education Grant to Help Support Science and Health Literacy

    Duquesne’s Department of Biological Sciences has received $285,000 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Education to help the University’s Partnership in Education project continue to create new films and multimedia activities that provide science and health literacy education in exciting, accessible formats. Pennsylvania congressman Mike Doyle worked to help secure the funding as part of the Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009. Read more »

    Stock Conducts Contemporary Ensemble in Grand Finale

    Professor David Stock, Duquesne University’s composer-in-residence in the Mary Pappert School of Music, will give his final performance with the Duquesne Contemporary Ensemble at the concert Grand Finale.

    Four premieres will celebrate this special occasion, which will feature works by Reza Vali, Randy Woolf, David Cutler and Stock himself. Stock also serves as director of the Duquesne Contemporary Ensemble.

    During his illustrious career, Stock’s has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, five National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, five Pennsylvania Council on the Arts fellowships and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Creative Achievement Award. Additionally, he is former composer-in-residence for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. A guest conductor throughout United States, Australia, Mexico and Poland, Stock’s compositions have been performed in the United States, Europe, Mexico, Australia and Korea.

    It will be on Thursday, April 16, at 8 p.m. in PNC Recital Hall, Mary Pappert School of Music, Duquesne University, 600 Forbes Ave.
