    Cardinal George to Kick Off New Lecture Series

    His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., the archbishop of Chicago, will be the inaugural speaker for a new lecture series in Duquesne’s McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts. As part of the Richard T. and Marion A. Byrnes Lecture Series, the cardinal will present The Importance of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition in the Life of a Catholic University, the Church and Society on Thursday, March 13 at 7 p.m. in the Duquesne Room.     Labriola Receives Distinguished Milton Society Award

    Dr. Albert Labriola, acting dean of the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts, received the Irene Samuel Memorial Award of the Milton Society of America at the annual convention of the Modern Language Association for co-editing and contributing to Milton in the Age of Fish (Duquesne University Press, 2006). The award recognizes the most distinguished multi-author collection on Milton. This is Labriola’s fourth Samuel Milton Award and the first for a volume from Duquesne University Press. Read more »

    Duquesne University’s greening efforts have reached an exceptional level with the purchase of more than 8 million kilowatt hours of Renewable Energy Credits from Strategic Energy.     Duquesne University has received an $800,000, eight-year grant from the Bayer Foundation to fund a new scholar/intern program for female and minority students in the Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences.     Human Health Risk Linked to Arsenic Additive in Chicken Feed

    In a follow-up study tracing the effects of arsenic additive to chicken feed, new research shows a potential risk for human disease. The arsenic compound, roxarsone, promotes the growth of blood vessels in human cell lines, which is a critical step in many diseases including cancer, said Dr. Partha Basu, corresponding author of the study and associate professor in the chemistry and biochemistry department at Duquesne University.     New Endowed Chair Will Focus on Community Service and Care

    The new Jacques Laval Endowed Chair in Justice for Vulnerable Populations at Duquesne University’s School of Nursing will lead community action research initiatives that incorporate service and care to the community. The chair is endowed through a bequest from the estate of Thomas F. Bogovich, a 1953 Duquesne business graduate and retired Penn Hills funeral director who died in 2006. Read more »
