Duquesne Celebrates a Wee Bit of Ireland With Songs, Play and Poetry

    Mar. 7, 2007

A Taste of Ireland, a free program of poetry, songs and a play, will be celebrated on Monday, March 19, at 6 p.m. in Duquesne University’s City View Café on the sixth floor of the Duquesne Union.

A highlight will be poetry readings by Desmond Egan, one of Ireland’s foremost contemporary poets. Egan is the winner of several international literature awards and has published 18 books of poetry that have been translated into more than 10 languages. A resident of County Kildare, he also has been artistic director of The Hopkins International Conference, a stellar literary festival in Ireland, since its inception.

A Taste of Ireland also will treat guests to songs by the 29-member group called the Duquesne Voices of Spirit, directed by Professor Christine Jordanoff of the Mary Pappert School of Music. Additionally, a one-act play, The Gaol Gate by Lady Augusta Gregory will be performed by Duquesne’s Red Masquers under the direction of Professor John Lane of the theater arts department.

Additionally, Egan will present a free public reading of his poetry at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, in the Mary Pappert School of Music PNC Recital Hall. A reception will follow.
