Duquesne Delivers Donation to Spiritan Church in Heart of New Orleans

DU’s Contribution Will Help Pay Rent, Utilities, Food and Clothing

When the Duquesne University community saw the aftermath of last year’s Hurricane Katrina disaster, it sprang into action. A year-long drive to aid Katrina victims ended with faculty, administration, staff, alumni and students raising more than $50,000. The contribution was recently presented to the Rev. Michel Boutot, C.S.Sp., who belongs to Duquesne University founders’ Spiritan Congregation, and serves as pastor to the hard-hit Holy Ghost Church in Uptown, New Orleans. Read more »

Duquesne Students Perform Pope John Paul II’s ‘The Jeweler’s Shop’

Duquesne University students will perform in The Jeweler’s Shop, the three-act play written by Karol Wojtyla in 1960, prior to his being named Pope John Paul II.  The play, which explores relationships between men and women, and the joys and pain of love and marriage, is being held in conjunction with The Phenomenology of John Paul II symposium at Duquesne.  The performances are free and open to the public. Prayer Vigil Calls for Hope and Healing

More than 1000 students, faculty and staff attended a special prayer vigil Tuesday evening at Duquesne University for five athletes wounded in the shooting incident. The Spiritan fathers led the service of hope and healing, and were joined by athletes, coaches, administrators, and representatives of the student body. Statement Regarding Shooting Incident

At approximately 2 a.m. on Sept. 17, 2006, five Duquesne University basketball players were injured in a shooting incident on campus after a dance. Two of the students were treated at local hospitals and released, and three remain hospitalized. The City of Pittsburgh Police Department is investigating the incident. Campus Police are cooperating with the City, and believe the shooter, who fled the scene, was not a Duquesne student. Read more »

Duquesne University President Dr. Charles Dougherty today announced that Carol Carter, vice president for university advancement, will depart Pittsburgh after nearly 25 years in fund raising here to reside in Florida. For the past two and a half years, Carter oversaw all aspects of fund raising, including launching the quiet phase of a new capital campaign, alumni relations, university events and public affairs at Duquesne. One of the contenders for the City of Pittsburgh’s casino license proposes to build a casino in conjunction with a new arena for the Pittsburgh Penguins, as well as housing and commercial development, between Fifth Ave. in Uptown and the lower Hill area.  The Pittsburgh Penguins are friends and neighbors of Duquesne University.  We understand their need for a new arena. In December, WDUQ 90.5 FM became the first radio station in the Pittsburgh market to utilize the “multicasting” capabilities of HD Radio technology. With the new technology, WDUQ began broadcasting “CD-quality” sound this past summer. Now, the station is offering two additional programming channels (WDUQ-2 and WDUQ-3) to augment the “News, Jazz, NPR” programming heard on the 90.5 FM signal throughout the tri-state region.
